Jean little is a really famous auother and has written a whole bunch of books, I've only read one, it called stand in the wind, it's not intense, just a light read, but very good.

[These 2 are both about a futuristic world were everyone is dived in to groupe that they live in based on there interests (i.e. if your smart you go to one place, if your brave you go to a different one.) Read Divergent first.]

Ship Breaker (Paolo Bacigalupi)
[Ship Breaker is about a dystopian society were... well it's hard to explain, but it's a really great book]
Drowned Citys (Paolo Bacigalupi)
[Same with Drowned Citys.]
